and Child were a very popular subject. The following paper examines Raphaels painting "Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints" and Hans Memlings "Virgin and Child and Catherine of Alexandria and
St. Barbara." The paper then presents a comparison and contrast of the two. Raphael Raphael, born in 1483, was one of the three most powerful and famous painters
of his day. He, and the others who were Leonardo and Michelangelo, were part of what is known as the High Renaissance period (Strickland, 1992; 38). "While the other two
were revered and their work admired, Raphael was adored.....so gentle and so charitable that even the animals loved him" (Strickland, 1992; 38). It is often claimed that his art was
perhaps the most expressive, completely reflective, of the High Renaissance period (Strickland, 1992; 38). The painting under examination, Raphaels "Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints" was painted in 1504-1505 and
is made with tempera, oil and gold, upon wood. It is approximately 66 7/8 x 67 7/8 in. and is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
It is clearly a picture of the Madonna and Baby Jesus. It is also a painting that has several saints surrounding the figures of Mary and Jesus. The two women
in the background appear to likely be angels, though they have no wings, and they are both holding feathers which appear to be writing instruments perhaps. The composition of
