only was he also an excellent painter, but he was able to give a sense of intimacy to the scene that few others were able to accomplish. We shall
examine his work through the painting, Madonna Sixtina Vasari, the sixteenth century biographer said of Raphael, that he was an artist as "talented, as he was gracious."
Certainly he was popular with clients as well as other artists. He shows this polish, according to Gilbert (1992) in a letter to a client: "I should consider
myself a great master if I had half the merits you mention in your letter. However, in your words I perceive the love that you bear me; ... I
am making use of a certain idea which comes into mind. Whether it is possessed of any artistic excellence I do not know. But I do strive to
attain it." Madonna Sixtina Raphael loved the image of the Mother and Child and used it often. Each reworking of the pair showed something new and delightful in the
