the responsibility lies in various types of crime is task that is sometimes confusing to say the least. Coming to an understanding of the guilt issues and the personal
nuances, for example, that interlace Joyce Carol Oates" "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" (a short story fictionalizing the real-life murders of Charles Schmid in the 1960s) is
a particularly complex task. This understanding is added to by the work of numerous authors , however, that have explored the issues of guilt and responsibility. Among the
more interesting of these are Susan Jacoby, Ellen Goodman, and Lara Adair. Only one of these authors directly broach the issue of crime and responsibility but the others investigate
the factors that enter into the male/female relationship and allow us insight on how these factors could ultimately lead to criminal acts such as those covered in Oates short story.
Through this insight we come to recognize that the responsibility of crimes as horrendous as rape and murders lies with those that perpetrate crimes but at the same time
we better understand that there is a complexity of factors that lead up to this responsibility. Although she does not discuss
this case specifically, Jacobys "Common Decency" allows insight to the Schmid cases and Oates fictionalized account of them from the perspective of the relative recent societal phenomena that has been
term "date rape" (199). Jacoby blasts those in our society that have a tendency to place so-called "date rape", a rape perpetrated by an acquaintance of the victim, in
a different category than a rape that is perpetrated by a stranger. She declares:
