A 6 page discussion of the ethics of abortion is concerned. The author of this paper examines both the pros and cons surrounding the issues of abortion, pointing out that there could indeed be many problems with pregnancies which result from rape. The conclusion is presented, however, that abortion is against natural law and given the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas to conclude that abortion even in cases or rape is ethically wrong. often rapes are excused by society as being a reflection of a womans behavior. Some contend that many cases of rape are, in fact, a direct responsibility of the women. Such views are antiquated and shocking to say the least. Do as we may to excuse and ignore rape, it is an ever growing component of our society. According to Parade Magazine "someone in the United States is murdered, raped, assaulted, or robbed every sixteen seconds" (Moyers, 1995). Many rapes are perpetrated against children who are still in school. Pharr (1997, 24) observes that teachers: "say that they witness an escalating number of sexual attacks against young girls as they pass through their school years, beginning with these fairly innocent stolen kisses, proceeding to snapped bra straps in early middle school, then to hands thrust up under girls shirts, and, finally, to reports of date rape". Rape is an inexcusible behavior regardless of the age group. It is neither an innocent act of "child" play nor a reflection of a womans behavior. Equally disturbing as the act of rape itself is when these acts result in pregnancy. Many in such cases have maintained that pregnancies which result from rape are clear cut cases in which abortion is morally permissible. We must examine this approach from a number of perspectives, however, prior to coming to a definitive answer. There are numerous other reasons a woman may seek an abortion.
