and the expansion of community services, the incidence of sexual assault remains high and research suggests that it also remains significantly underreported. This examination of current literature pertaining to rape
will examine how rape and different types of rape are defined and the impact that this violent crime has on society, in terms of its overall cost and the
detrimental effect that it has on its victims. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published statistics that indicate that roughly 20 percent of the worlds female population and 5
percent of the male have been sexually assaulted at some point during their lives. Furthermore, this cross-cultural research indicates that these individuals are at increased risk in regards to a
variety of negative and chronic health consequences (Busch-Armendariz, et al, 2011). The UCR defines "forcible rape" as "carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will" (Busch-Armendariz, et al,
2011, p. 61). Statutory offenses refer to sexual behavior where no force is used, but when the victim is under the age of legal consent (Busch-Armendariz, et al, 2011). However,
UCR statistics fail to encompass a variety of crimes, such as the rape of men or boys or rapes that are committed by blood relatives. According to UNIFEM one out
of three females, regardless of age, will be sexually assaulted during their lifetimes. Furthermore, UNIFEM points out that sexual assault occurs along a continuum that ranges from forcible rape to
