a unilateral "Just Say No"-style campaign which lacks meaningful nuance and distinction between types of drugs is insufficient for understanding and combatting these trends of increased drug use. For this
reason, one should strive to have a superior understanding of the different types of drugs being abused, their particular destructive capacities, and which ones should be the most concerning. This
paper puts forth an argument that some drugs are more destructive than others, with the ranking being (in order of most destructive to least): methamphetamines, cocaine, steroids, ecstasy, and marijuana.
Methamphetamines are some of the most widely abused drugs among young people because of their relatively low cost, ease of access, and high addictive potential. Studies also conclusively show that
it is one of the most destructive drugs available: a 2011 study, for instance, showed that a single high dose of meth was sufficient to induce necrotic striatal cell lesions
in mice lasting up to three months (Tulloch et al., 2011, p. 162). Habitual use over just a short period of time can so sufficiently alter brain structure and chemistry
as to completely prevent the body from manufacturing the neurotransmitter dopamine without ingesting the drug; in other words, users become unable to feel pleasure or function normally without meth (National
Institutes of Health, 2012b). Moreover, the potential to overdose on meth is quite high. These factors contribute to meths position as the most concerning drug, and the one which should
receive the most focus from those who would combat the trend of increased drug abuse among young people. Following meth, cocaine is the next most destructive drug used by
young people. It is similar in function and chemistry to meth, but several factors make it less of a pressing concern. For one, the increased cost of cocaine makes it
