A dominate society by its very definition demands superiority, although it may not show it
through its actions. One of the many ironic notes to the story is the emotional superiority of the grandfather who upon his deathbed admits, " Son, after
Im gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born
days, a spy in the enemys country ever since I give up my gun back in the Reconstruction. Live with your head in the lions mouth. I want you to
overcome em with yeses, undermine em with grins, agree em to death and destruction, let em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open (Ellison 1632).
We see the posturing, jeering, and rudeness of the white "superior" business community, who of course came
through the front door of the hotel, in contrast to an old man who breathes his last admitting that he has done "what he has had to do to survive."
