respectful, or non-materialistic. Unfortunately, while parents want children who are perhaps not materialistic, they are likely teaching them otherwise in relationship to teaching by example. The following paper examines how
one could go about raising children to be non-materialistic. Raising Non-Materialistic Children There are clearly many ways one could teach children to not be concerned with materialism. A
parent could instill in their child the need to donate to those who are less fortunate, to give to others, volunteer, and even teach them not to ask for things.
A parent could do this by example and by teaching from a very early age. However, such endeavors are not always simple or easy and as such there may be
other, simpler ways, in which parents could teach non-materialism, especially if the parents need to work on their own materialism, which is perhaps likely the case with many people in
the nation. However, if a parent is non-materialistic then the children will generally learn by example and as they grow they will become more and more prone to being non-materialistic.
In looking at how a parent can work towards making their children non-materialistic one author notes that a very important step is to "Just say no! Always giving in
to your kids materialistic desires doesnt do her any favors. Say no to unending whims and consumer demands, even if that provokes tantrums at first" (Borba). It is important to
