to divide the family, which is "crammed into a tiny South Side Chicago apartment" (Hosten 52). Lena Younger, "Mama," is the matriarch of the family. She lives with her
two children, Beneatha and Walter Lee; Walters wife, Ruth; and their son, Travis, a young boy. Walter is the plays protagonist as the focus of much of the drama centers
around his development as a man and a father. Walters character development over the course of the play also makes him the most dynamic character. Mr. Linder is the
spokesman for the Clybourne Park Improvement Association, who comes to the Young home to offer them money for not pursuing their plans to resettle in this all-white Chicago suburb. Mr.
Linder constitutes the plays antagonist, as he represents the socially entrenched racism that prescribes the boundaries of African American life during this era, i.e., the 1950s. As this factor remains
the same throughout the play, Mr. Linder also can be considered to be the plays static character. Premiering on Broadway in 1959, "A Raisin in the Sun" was considered
radical because it directly addressed racism from a black perspective (Paulk 76). Lenas husband and the father of Walter and Beneatha has recently died, and though they are grieving,
the family has placed high hopes on having a better future with the insurance money. The beginning of the play establishes the characters-their hopes and dreams-and the struggle that each
one goes through to realize some fulfillment in life. Walter tries to tell his latest plan on how to succeed at business to his wife, Ruth, who has obviously heard
similar plans in the past, which have never materialized. Lena wants to buy a house, which will be the fulfillment of a dream she shared with her deceased husband. Walter
