The following is the speech given by the head of the dam project in a meeting with leaders of the resistance to the dam project. Ladies and gentlemen, as
it stands at present, I am sure that your perception of this situation is that someone has to lose. If the dam is built, the people of this region suffer
and the world loses some of its essential biological diversity. If the dam is not built, the investors and employees of this company suffer. What I am here to argue,
however, is that there is a third alternative in which no one has to lose. There are numerous examples throughout the world that show us the way towards logical, sustainable
development. Edward O. Wilson, author and professor of entomology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, has written and lectured extensively on the topic of bio-diversity (Madigan
28). In an interview with journalist Timothy J. Madigan, Wilson indicated that he feels that environmental problems are basically ethical because the solutions we attempt now are intrinsically connected
to our self-perception as a species and also to the future that we envision for ourselves and our descendants (28). Wilson sees humanism as ultimately providing a sound basis
for environmental ethics that can direct humanity toward the "long-term security of both the world environment and the bio-diversity within it" (Madigan 28). This philosophy can be seen in numerous
