that is, individuals from roughly age 18 through their early twenties, leave the churches they grew up in droves. Bob Hetzler, who is highly involved with Christian organizations in Southern
California, reports that this text has been a great aid to him in reaching young people. The text is based on a study of 1000 young adults "church dropouts," who
were interviewed as to why they stopped attending church ("Book: Essential"). Their answers and the response of the authors to the information gathered by this study are surprising, as well
as illuminating and insightful. First of all, the authors present the rationale behind the investigation into this topic, which is due to the fact that research shows that roughly
two-thirds of church going young adults between the ages of 18 and 22, that is, around 70 percent "drop out" of church attendance (Rainer and Rainer 3). In conducting the
study interviews, participants repeatedly mentioned the same theme, which was that they "did not see church as essential" to his or her life (Rainer and Rainer 2). This response is
what prompted the authors to pursue the main focus of the book, which is define what constitutes an essential church, that is, the relationship in which the individual does feel
that church attendance plays an essential role in his or her life. In other words, the thrust of the book is not only to discern why young people left the
church, but also why 30 percent stayed. Having related the dismal statistic that 70 percent of young adults stopped going to church between the ages of 18 and 22,
