railways and trains proved incredibly versatile as well as confusing in relationship to new technology in the face of war strategy during the American Civil War, during WWI technology and
warfare techniques had advanced a great deal and in light of this railways proved invaluable and powerful. The following paper examines the role of railways in Europe during WWI.
Railroads During WWI One can readily assume, and rightly so, that the railways during WWI were used for transporting soldiers, civilians, weaponry, and supplies of all kinds. Planes had
only recently come into play and as such they were not to play as large a role in the war, especially in relationship to transport, as was the railways. Tanks
also existed, although in a somewhat primitive state and as such the railways and trains can easily be argued as the most powerful machine in WWI. And, by the time
WWI had come around many of the capabilities of the railway system had been assessed and appreciated in relationship to warfare strategies. Prior to that, as mentioned in the introduction,
railways were so relatively new that strategists had yet to really utilize their usefulness. With these basic elements in mind the paper turns to specific historical accounts and references to
important railway events. In one look at the history of the war, in 1918 President Wilson sent troops to join up with Allied troops in Europe in the hopes
of helping many Russians in the face of civil war.1 It was generally understood that the Russians railway system was not sufficient to do them any good in the face
