of the best. Scorcese further integrates the script with the pictoral scheme of the film which contains muted tones and a sense that life is rough. Of course, most films
in the genre, and even the Rocky series which does not come close to the brilliance of this work, embraces a similar tone. The success of the film was not
totally reliant on the tone and direction of Scorcese. Much of the credit has to go to the choreographer. One might ask why would a choreographer be needed for a
boxing film? The success of such films are contingent on the moves made by the actors who just play the role of boxers. In filming any boxing movie, even one
as authentic and violent as Raging Bull, actors are not really hurt by the punches thrown (Bessone 127). The way in which it works is that the camera angles,
and fight sequences are rehearsed over and over again, even right down to the blinking of the eyes (127). Jimmy Nickerson is responsible for initiating this type of choreography
and he pioneered the new aggressiveness of celluloid prizefighting (127). He did this in both Rocky and Rocky II, which was good, but elevated boxing realism to an art
in Raging Bull (127). Thus, part of the reason for the success of the film has to do with the choreographed movements of the actors. These movements obviously play
into the way in which the film is seen by the public and its overall pictoral scheme. The color scheme is an integral part, but again, much is muted to
present an overall dismal tone. This is not a happy film and does not contain very bright colors which would have a different significance. Of course, this type of depressing
