the cosmetics industry. Methodology I input the search term "RFID" into a journal database and got thousands of hits-thats too many to be useful, so I added a limiter:
"RFID cosmetics." This came back with only a handful, which Im using in this paper. I also input "RFID pros cons" and got a few more, which
Ill also include. The obvious conclusion is that the cosmetics industry is not yet being mentioned frequently as a heavy RFID user. The "pros and cons" parameter, interestingly,
brought up several articles from libraries. Literature Review The first article, which appeared in Chain Drug Review, discussed both sides of the RFID issue; that is, whether it is
"one of the most promising ... technologies of recent years" or a massive invasion of privacy (Pros, Cons of RFID talk of industry 2004, p. 53). The article reveals
that Wal-Mart is a driving force behind the adoption of the technology, and initially demanded that its top 100 suppliers have their merchandise shipped on "RFID-enabled cases and pallets, and
individual items ... tagged" (Pros, Cons of RFID 2004, p. 53). Difficult with tagging has made it difficult for suppliers to meet the deadline, so Wal-Mart will work with
a supplier that "gets 80% of its products tagged by the deadline" (Pros, Cons of RFID 2004, p. 53). Although Wal-Mart says the pilot test has gone well,
there have been problems from unexpected sources: radio towers and bug zappers. Cell phone towers "sometimes leak unwanted radio waves into the RFID readers," and "insects hitting bug
