times, it becomes difficult to pinpoint exactly why slavery existed in British colonies and that the Founders of America held slaves themselves. After all, it was a time of the
Enlightenment where new ideas were being bandied about. Could it be that racism shadowed this exciting time in history? A student writing on this subject might note that during this
particular time, it would be negligent to ignore the fact that while ideas of equality reigned, the black man in America did not stand a chance. Racism would come about
in respect to the African slave as well as in respect to the Indians they found there. Moore suggests that the idea that Indians were savage is related to the
fact that they were treated poorly1. In other words, the savagery was not innate2. This is important to note because many people point out that the Europeans were only reacting
to the Indians who were on the attack. A student writing about race and racism in colonial America may suggest a thesis such as the idea that slavery came
about not due to racism, but to economics. Even when it comes to the Native Americans, this seems to be the case. The Europeans were conquerors. They wanted land and
they needed slaves to build the country economically. It is also interesting to note that things were not as they seem. For example, people are taught that all slaves were
black and owners were white. This is not true. Additionally, there was intermarriage between black and white women during the 1600s in the colonies3. Slaves would even own their own
