that people who complain about racism are essentially whining about nothing. But, there are just as many people who are well aware of the fact that racism is still alive and well in the United States and while civil rights struggles may have created some positive change the truth is that many people are still racist. The following paper illustrates how racism is clearly alive in the United States and how this effecting society. Racism in the United States While people may not readily see racism on the streets where they live, there are just as many who do experience it every day. In schools and businesses and the political system racism exists. And, while someone may argue that there is a black man running for President, a black man who has a very good chance of becoming President, and this proves racism does not exist, this is not true. Just because a black man may become President does not mean that most of the nation is run by white men with power. In one respect, as noted by one author, "The increase in racism must be placed in the context of the crisis of capitalism - because it is the capitalist class which benefits from racism, using it to divide and to confuse the people about the reasons for the economic and social crisis of the system. Because the system is in crisis, there is an increase in the intensity and complexity of the ongoing ideological war on class unity and the principles and practice of equality" (Marshall, 2008).
