police is also not new, However, in recent years that has been a great deal of attention paid to the role of racisms in the policies force and how it occurs as well as how it may be prevented. There are many examples of racism, the Stephen Lawrence case is one example, and it appears that the shooting of two black teenage girls in Birmingham on the 31st of December 2002 may also become a race issue as the investigation continues. The student may like toad a few more brief examples to any introduction they write. The police have an important role. They are entrusted with the upholding of the law, policing the populace to ensure the order is kept. They do not write the law, they merely uphold that which is decided upon by the legislature and enforced though the executive and the judiciary, meaning that there are levels of discretion concerning how the job is done, but not what that job is. In recent years there have been many Acts which have increased or amended the powers of the police, the main acts are PACE (Criminal Evidence Act ) 1984, Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, and most recently the Police Reform Act 2002. These themselves have been the source of racial tensions. One of the most critical reports that has been published is that of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry (CRE, 1999). It was as a result of this there were recognised need for change in the police force and the acceptance of the existence of institutional racism (CRE, 1999).
