to an extent goes along with the general thinking on racism. That is, many people are simply ignorant about other races so they end up with prejudices against the unknown.
On the other hand, it is also true that some people are hateful. Bissoondath writes about the fact that people actually use terms that come to their minds based on
what other individuals look like, and the remarks are sometimes but not always racist (75). The author goes on to explain that some people make racist remarks, or remarks that
would be perceived as racist, but they do so innocently (Bissoondath 75). That is, they may make a remark based on something they heard, but have no idea that the
term is derogatory. This sort of thing does happen all the time. Bissoondath suggests that all people are curious about one another, that there is a lot of ignorance,
but also that these things are not necessarily mean-spirited. The author claims that there are dangers when activists jump on every indiscretion and seem to pop up whenever a seemingly
racist incident takes place (Bissoondath 76). Al Sharpton comes to mind here. Whenever anything has a racist bent, Sharpton protests, and sometimes the end result is negative. The Tawana
Brawley case is one that demonstrates things are not always how they appear. When black men are shot by police officers it is not necessarily a case of racism. It
might in fact be, but pointing fingers at every incident and labeling it as racist is wrong. This position is seemingly in concert with Bissoondaths view. In summary, people make
