Othello to murder his lover. Some blame Iago for the events, but there is a lingering concern that Othello himself is the evil character. He is seemingly a fine gentleman
on the outside, but he snaps and kills an innocent woman. Iago is a 28 year old Venetian. This character has a wife and by most accounts is rather
ordinary. Yet, few could call this intriguing character ordinary as he does a variety of things in the context of the work that might be construed as rather extraordinary.
In evaluating the play through this important character, there are several ways to explore the topic. One is that there is inherent racism in the play. This notion is
rather controversial but there are many ways of evaluating the work. A Marxist interpretation would notice issues of a class divide, racism, equality issues, and abuses of power. Each of
these things is present in Othello, but some believe too much is made of it. Yet, it is an interesting notion to explore. Saunders (2004) examines the work and claims
that Shakespeare in fact might have been expressing race based hatred in regard to the actions of Iago. Much is made of Iago and Othellos skin color. Othello is a
Moor and is dark skinned while Iago is an ordinary Venetian. This is something that comes up throughout the play. Many have interpreted Iago as being evil, but what
is Iagos true motivation? It could in fact be that he is envious of Othello. There may be a sense of entitlement or envy in terms of what Othello has
that Iago could never posses and this might be related to race and class strata. Iago may feel that the positions should be reversed and that a Moor should not
