it will employ a post-colonial approach to criticism as this literary theory encompasses how "knowledge of subordinate people is produced and used" (Post-colonialism). As illustrated by the works of
Edward Said, post-colonial theory addresses how the West has defined those outside of their cultural paradigm as "other" and imposed upon them Western concepts of their identity. The basic
plot to Othello can be stated quite simply. Othello, a Moor and general of the Venetian army, is a military leader of extraordinary character and ability. He marries Desdemona, the
daughter of a prosperous Venetian merchant. He also alienates Iago, an ensign in his command who hates Othello and plots to cause his downfall. Iago achieves this by making it
seem that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio, the man that Othello favored for promotion over Iago. Convinced that Desdemona is unfaithful, Othello murders the woman he loves, who
is totally innocent and pure. He immediately learns the truth and kills himself in remorse. As this brief synopsis illustrates, the success of the play hinges on Shakespeares ability to
