Huckleberry Finn. There is actually evidence to support both sides of this claim, however, I believe in the end the reader must acknowledge that the element of racism cannot be removed from this story entirely. The characters in this story are full and complex and therefore exhibit a wide range of experiences and personalities. This puts them into a variety of situation which are able to be interpreted in a variety of ways. But, the only logical conclusion by the end of this book that the reader can reach is that there is indeed evidence of racism in this story. Racism and Huck Finn "Huck Finn is Twains attempt to come to grips with the fractured vision, the felt confusion wrought upon the nations emerging consciousness by this unthinkable calamity" (Mauro, 1997). This book is about a very turbulent time in history, a time which Twain himself witnessed and was influenced by. There is no reasonable means of growing up in such surroundings without being influenced by them, and to this extent both Twain and Huck Finn were inherently racist because they were products of their environment. There have actually been schools which have banned Huckleberry Finn from their libraries and their classrooms, based upon the references to racism which are involved in this story (Is Huck Finn a Racist Book, 2002). The main issue involves the character of Jim, who is one of the main characters. Jim is a slave and Twain presents his character as dim-witted and childlike. This indeed gives one the impression that he is likening being black to being dimwitted. ...
