discusses the subject of racism in America today. Discussion America is a racist society, and has been one since the founding of the country; it would be foolish to deny
that. The Civil Rights movement that began to flourish in the 1960s helped blacks make some headway, but although there is more equality in law, true equality is still very
far away, and racism (along with sexism and xenophobia) still taint the soul of the nation. One source notes that much of the debate today is about the possible methods
we might use to achieve diversity; but focusing on diversity isnt the answer (Clark, 2003). When we focus on this issue, we ignore much deeper and more serious questions, namely
the questions of power and history (Clark, 2003). "Without an unflinching understanding of the history of racism in America, and the enduring imbalances of power and wealth, status and privilege,
further progress toward racial justice is unlikely" (Clark, 2003). That is, racial equality and progress is going to depend on his taking a hard look at who has the power,
how they got it, and what they are likely to do to keep it. Clark lays it on the line, saying that racial oppression is a tool that whites use
to secure benefits for themselves "at the expense of African slaves and their American-born descendants" (Clark, 2003). Whites have benefited immensely from the labor of black slaves and lower-class black
workers, because society is generally set up to favor them (Clark, 2003). They are exempt "from harm and burden, which accrue to racial groups at the expense of others" (Clark,
