todays society the legal rights may be in place but the social attitudes of separation and victimisation still exist, not only between whites and one whites, but manifesting as a
type of racial pride between all races (Gurza, 2000). Gangs can be seen as an expression of belonging to a specific racial identity, an expression that results in
high levels of violent, For example in Los Angles alone more than 10,000 people have been killed as a result of gang related activity, whilst many of these may not
be direct racism, many will be race related due to the way gang membership is determined (Crouch, 2003). Therefore to deal with root causes of the problem, such as the
racial undertones to the reason gangs are formed as well as the attitudes that make racism acceptable and violence expected, need to be addressed. It is only when understanding the
cause than a cure can be developed. However, there is no single cure only a series of measures that will help gradually change attitude and transform the social norms of
those affected. In looking at creating a solution we need to identify where the disintegration exists and how it exists so that
effort can be focused to prevent the conflict arising and ensure that there is interaction that prevents the social divisions occurring that create this environment. However this is likely to
take many years. We can consider the racial identity model and see that there are a wide range of relevant issues that
are included in this. Most notably is the aspect that by the time a an individual reaches adolescence they have already developed their racial and ethnical attitudes towards themselves as
