Research Compiled by P. Giltman 8/2010 Please Notwithstanding the first sentence of the second
paragraph of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, "we hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal", it is clear that despite this noble ideal there
has been and still is to a lesser degree a potent sexist and racist attitude in this country. One may define sexism as an attitude or behavior based on
traditional stereotypes of sexual roles and the subsequent discrimination or prejudice against an individual based entirely on their sex. This discrimination has been applied to women throughout this nations
history. Clear evidence of this can easily be found in the 19th Amendment of the U.S. constitution, which states that "the right of citizens to vote shall not be
denied or abridged by The United States or by any state on account of sex". This amendment was ratified in 1920, which means that for over 100 years since
the founding of this nation, women, although making up a majority of the population, were denied this basic right of citizenship. Racism, which may be defined as a belief or
doctrine that there are inherent differences between the various human races with the inevitable consequence that ones race is in some way superior to all the others. This
can and does lead to policies by governmental organizations depriving members of the "inferior race" of certain privileges in society that others have. In this nation, before the Civil
