undoubtedly because, amid a plethora of racist notions and white supremacist-sounding statements, Buchanan outlines a demographic truth, which is that Europeans and European-descended people are not reproducing at a rate
sufficient to replace their numbers. In his text, Buchanan points out of the worlds twenty countries with the lowest birthrates, eighteen are in Europe. In 1960, European-descended people accounted for
one-fourth of the worlds population. In 2000, this figure had shrunk to one-sixth and by 2050, it is projected that it will only be one-sixth (Buchanan 12). According to
Buchanans worldview this equates with whites becoming a "vanishing race" and he predicts social and cultural doom (Buchanan 12). Buchanans text raises a question: Why is this man so frightened?
Examination of this question suggests that racism has its roots not only in the human urge toward self-preservation, but draws on cultural and societal precedents whose influences linger despite being
discredited and falling out of fashion. To illustrate this point, first requires examining Buchanans views in greater detail. Buchanans worldview Buchanans fear goes beyond racism, or even a belief
in white supremacy, although this is certainly a factor in his views, as he argues that the declining influence of the white race means the end of American civilization and
society as we know it and, furthermore, the end of Western civilization in the process. His vision of the "Death of the West" is founded directly on falling fertility rates.
With the country in the hands of non-whites, Buchanan sees certain trends as becoming more increasingly more severe. He argues that the country has become "de-Christianized" and that the new
