the South is now integrated and the segregation that occurs by choice--such as in the way of churches--is not construed as racially problematic. The people get along. In this article,
that looks at Huntington, Long Island specifically, there are charged of exclusionary zoning (2005). A spokesman of the town of Huntington denies the charges (2005). Many believe that
it is unfair for this to take place in todays enlightened age. There is little racial tension to speak of, even though there seems to be underlying negative attitudes. Still,
in 2005, there are more and more people intermarrying and interracial dating is not uncommon. Things have come a long way in forty years time. Today, there are many black
doctors, lawyers and politicians. There is more than tolerance. There is acceptance of many different races. There is still de facto segregation that appears in both the North and South,
but few would call it a situation where there is tension. Going back forty years, things were quite different. In order to compare and contrast the racial situation between 2005
and 1965, an article from the New York Times says it all. From the outset, one important difference that may be noted is that blacks were called Negroes. Roberts (1965)
