find ourselves acting as though we have no more sense of enlightenment than we maintained years ago. For example, what have we learned from our incarceration of the Japanese Americans
during WWII? It seems next to nothing as many citizens take it upon themselves to attack, verbally and physically, those of Arab descent following the attacks of September, 2001. We
like to think that we have come a long way in the few centuries that this country has been in existence, but the truth is that racial problems, discrimination, and
essentially racism go very deep and cause many to lash out violently when tensions rise. In the following paper we examine the reality of racially motivated hate crimes, discussing their
presence today and offering possible solutions. Why Should We Be Concerned? Racially motivated hate crimes are something that simply should no be tolerated. We like to think that
we, as the United States, serve as an example to the rest of the world. We like to think that we are far better and far more fair than any
other country or culture. Yet, we find that in the midst of telling the world how tolerant and wonderful we are, we find that our citizens are no more enlightened
than we were during times of slavery, or during witch trials, or during any other period in history. Of course, the majority of people in the country are outraged by
such racially motivated hate crimes, but we truly do very little to stop it. We, as a people, still tell racial jokes, we make fun of people who are different,
and we subtly, or aggressively, discriminate against people who are different. When we act this way we are not the enlightened and freedom loving nation we claim to be. We
