been denied opportunities, discriminated against and sometimes killed because of their ethnicity. This paper explores some of the racial issues facing the nation, today and in history. Historical and Contemporary
Consequences of Racial Discrimination Blacks, Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics, women, the handicapped, gays, lesbians and many others have faced discrimination, which we can define as "pervasive and open denial of
civil, social, political, educational, and economic opportunities" (Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). A report from the Committee on National Statistics says that there are vast differences in outcomes among various ethnic
and racial groups evident today, in such areas as "employment, income and wealth, housing, education, criminal justice, health, and other areas" (Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). There could be many reasons
for these disparities, but they are so wide-spread and so large as to suggest that they are the result of "discriminatory treatment" which still persists in American society, and which
serves "to undercut the achievement of equal opportunity" (Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). It appears from what this study says that each group is having trouble in a specific area. For
example, "Hispanics have higher school dropout rates than other racial and ethic groups" (Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). African-Americans and whites are separated by a large and ever-growing gap in wealth
(Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). Native Americans "are incarcerated in federal prisons at higher rates than any other minority racial group," a somewhat surprising finding, since we hear mostly about young
black offenders (Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). And Asian-Americans "have poorer access to health care services and treatments than whites" (Measuring racial discrimination, 2004). The fact that each group appears
to be facing a different set of problems indicates that discrimination is pervasive, but it may also have some connection to the treatment these groups have faced in the past.
