how it adds to ones understanding of the theme of the play. Discussion The title of the play comes from Proverbs 11:29: "He that troubleth his own house / Shall
inherit the wind." That seems to apply particularly to Rachel and her father, as they end up on opposite sides by the end of the play. To a modern audience
(at least a modern non-fundamentalist audience), the play is infuriating. The townspeople are the worst kind of "Christian"-judgmental, closed-minded, and smug; absolutely sure that they know whats best because they
study the Bible. They are mortally offended by the idea of evolution, so they throw a century of science out the window and instead cling to superstition. When their science
teacher, Mr. Cates, reads a textbook that quotes Darwin, hes put on trial for teaching evolution. He explains: "I had the book in my hand ... I opened it up
and ready my sophomore science class Chapter 17, Darwins Origin of Species. ... All it says is that man wasnt just stuck here like a geranium in a flower pot;
that living comes from a long miracle, it didnt just happen in seven days" (Lawrence and Lee 8). Rachel replies, "Theres a law against it" (Lawrence and Lee 8). And
Cates returns, "I know that" (Lawrence and Lee 8). The real struggle is between science and ignorance, between people who insist that the Bible is the literal word of God
and those who have reasonable doubt. Unfortunately, in this small down, any hint of individual thought or the least deviation from approved thinking brings down great scorn. This is particularly
