within the environment. Back in 1962, when biologist Rachel Carson first warned about the negative effects of indiscriminate use of man-made chemicals, no one had this mindset. Carsons work not
only launched the environmentalist movement in the US, but it also changed the perspective of a generation in the way it regards humanitys place in the natural environment. Silent
Spring consisted of a poetic, yet rigorous presentation of the negative effects of pesticide use?particularly DDT. In order to appreciate the impact that this book had on American society, it
is necessary to look back at some of the reactions that her work garnered at that time. For example, a former US secretary of agriculture, Ezra T. Benson, was quoted
as wondering what all the furor over pesticides was about and why should a "spinster with no children be so concerned about genetics?" in the first place (Lean 46).
It didnt take Benson long to arrive at an explanation that he felt was logical. He concluded that Carson was "probably a communist" for writing a book that criticized American
industry (Lean 46). Other opponents agreed and one substantiated Bensons assessment by stating that "her reference to the selfishness of insecticide manufacturers probably reflects her communist sympathies" (Lean 46).
On the other hand, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas pronounced Silent Spring to be "the most revolutionary book since Uncle Toms Cabin" (Lean 46). It was Justice Douglas assessment
that proved to be correct as countless environmental studies verified Carsons conclusions. Carsons work not only succeeded in bringing about a rapid phase-out of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides, but
