been a great outcry against racial profiling in the instance of crime, and an increasing focus on how race plays a very powerful role in crime and in the prison
system of the nation. In many cases individuals argue that minorities are more likely to commit crime because they are more likely to live in impoverished, inner city, conditions that
lead individuals to crime more than middle class settings. There are those who argue that whatever the case, the minorities are targeted far more often than whites in relationship to
criminal activity. With these possibilities in mind the following paper examines these issues, as they ultimately relate to the prison system of the nation. The paper examines how race plays
a very important role in who is imprisoned and for how long they are imprisoned. Race and the Prison System In all honesty, the reality, or condition, of race
and the prison system and crime is a very difficult topic to truly dissect. This is because of many reasons. For example, many could argue that there are more minorities
in prison and more minorities committing crime because a larger portion of their population lives in poverty and is thus engaged in crime. But, this does not take into account
racial profiling and how it is often the minorities who are sentenced more often and for longer amounts of time than their white counterparts. In todays society it is essentially
impossible to discern who the real criminals are and who the victims of racial profiling may be in relationship to the statistics available. For the most part articles will argue
