West, having emigrated from Scotland during the Gold Rush era and relocating north to Oregon decades later. My family has always supported a rural lifestyle, where community members know
each other, recognize those people around them and support the ideal of a working community of neighbors. In this community, I have fostered my sense of rural identity, but
Harrisburg clearly lacks racial and/or social diversity, which is necessary in gaining a global perspective. The community of Harrisburg has a population
of approximately 3,400 people, most of whom are white, Anglo-Europeans. The United States Census profile data for Harrisburg has a median household income (in 2000) of approximately $40,000 a
year and a home value of approximately $114,000, making it an affordable community for middle class families (Harrisburg, 2006). The racial composition of Harrisburg is primarily white/non-Hispanic (over 90
percent), with small populations of Hispanic (almost 6 percent), American Indian (almost 3 percent) and other races (Harrisburg, 2006). This places my family in the dominant population, with the largest
percentage of people in the city of Harrisburg sharing my common physical characteristics. There is also a large percentage of the white population that comes from the same kind
of background as my family. almost 24 percent of the population has a family history from the United Kingdom (Harrisburg, 2006) (See Appendix).
There is a relatively small population of individuals who do not share common physical characteristics with my family. There are some minor physical differences, including differences in
