in which a small, wealthy elite rules the rest of us. Given this, its odd that the subject of social class comes up only infrequently when in discussion of racial problems. This paper examines the works of three black writers, Cornell West, bell hooks and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and what they see as answers to the problem of race in this country. Discussion The best way for the student to approach this is probably to read and summarize each article, then compare them to see what suggestions each author makes with regard to the problem of race and class, and whether hooks and Gates support Wests comments with regard to what he sees as the nihilism now pervasive in black American life. Thats the pattern this paper will follow, beginning with Cornel West. Cornel West is a man rightly frustrated with the fact that more than 100 years after the slaves were freed, blacks still have to fight for equality. Hes something of a radical and can be abrasive, but his impatience and frustration are understandable and shouldnt be allowed to obscure the value of his work. The student needs to read Wests essay carefully, because although he starts by discussing the positions liberals and conservatives traditionally take with regard to black issues, that isnt the focus of the piece: West is really discussing the destructive force of nihilism (sense of hopelessness and worthlessness) that pervades the black community.
