or Hispanic, the issue of poverty is the only component of the caste system that fails to discriminate; indeed, anyone without the socially dignifying aspect of financial status are lumped together and inhabit the lowest rung on the social ladder. When considering whether there a set of values, attitudes and lifestyles that characterizes the indigent as it relates to social class and oppression, it is important to acknowledge how those living in poverty are indeed a subculture due to what the majority look upon as an aberrant existence. Many do not have jobs or a decent place to live, while others are heavily involved in illegal activity just to survive, while still others become homeless because of a combination of mental illness and substance abuse. In essence, the fundamental principle is how people are segregated first by social class and then segregated once again because of their inability to pull themselves out of the oppressiveness into which they have become trapped. One of the most damning aspects of social class and oppression is the manner by which all members of a particular race become grouped together for the actions of a relative few. By casting a negative light toward, for example, being black, the criminal justice system clearly demonstrates a great deal of ignorance and disrespect for that individual; just because someone is a member of a certain race does not mean that he represents any of the negative connotations associated with that race. Marginalization of this sort abounds with regard to the difference of skin color, ethnic origin and gender - not to mention homophobia - and nowhere else is it more prevalent than in the media (Rome, 2006).
