boasts a large percentage of African Americans and Hispanics. This cultural diversity is complimented by Native Americans and a number of other races and cultures as well. One
might think that given our cultural diversity Texans as a rule would be more tolerant of people that are different than them. While that might be the case overall,
the unfortunate truth is that a vein of racism continues to exist in Texas. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Although for
the most part people in the Dallas area treat one another civilly regardless of how they look, its always in the back of ones mind that when they are dealing
with someone that is like them, i.e. someone of the same race and culture, they are more likely to be treated fairly than if they are dealing with someone that
is different than them. This is the realities of race relations in the Dallas region. Unfortunately, racism is not only still very much in play today in Dallas but
is likely to be an element of our future as well. It is important to recognize that racism in our area manifests in a diversity of ways. It
impregnates our hiring and firing practices, our educational institutions, housing, and even our criminal justice system as well as hundreds of other institutions. Having grown up in Dallas, I
am all too familiar with how certain people look with disdain on anyone that is different than them. Most often this is something that occurs subtly rather than pronouncedly.
