Kankakee, Illinois is probably different from that of a person of color. From what this writer/tutor has read, a reasonable introductory paragraph might read something like the following: From my
Caucasian perspective, race relations in Kankakee are good. Everyone in my acquaintance, myself included, endeavors to treat people simply as people and not as members of a demographic group. However,
primarily through media articles, I gather that race relations in my community could be better and that there remains room for improvement. Of course, if this is not the
students perception, the student should adapt this to fit his/her personal views. Personal observations could lead into a brief description of Kankakee and its racial makeup. Members of my
community primarily look like me: Kankakee is a small community located south of Chicago. According to 2000 census figures the population was 27,491; however, the current 2006 population is estimated
to be 26,480 (Kankakee, IL, 2007). The racial makeup of Kankakee is White, 47.8 percent; African American, 41.1; Hispanic, 9.3; other races. 5.5 and American Indian, .8 percent (Kankakee, IL,
2007). As this racial mix suggests, people of color are not unusual in Kankakee, but there is a white majority. How leaders treat people of color: A controversy has
been brewing in Kankakee that is connected to a "personal matter" concerning Dr. Brian Ali, the Superintendent of Kankakee School District 111 (Jackson, 2007). The school board has taken the
official stance that a personal matter was being addressed, but was being handled and should remain private (Jackson, 2007). The fact that the details of the personal matter have not
been made public and being handled discreetly by the school board suggests that leaders in Kankakee are treating Dr. Ali as they would anyone else in his position. How
