Blackmuns famous dictum that "in order to get beyond racism, we must first take race into account" (Puddington, 1995, p.21) is telling. In other words, if one ignores racism it
does not go away. This has been proven time and time again. In fact, the color line is quite strong in contemporary society and has been most accurately displayed as
being present in America when the OJ Simpson verdict was read. There were gasps in white audiences throughout the nation and applause from black viewers.
It is not necessarily true that the African American populous believed in OJ Simpsons innocence. Rather, they believed in the inequality of the system. In other words,
they were applauding the fact that a black man did not get a lynching in the courtroom. The other side is that while a jury brought in an acceptable verdict,
the white viewers were shocked because they assumed that this black man was guilty. Why do so many white people think OJ is guilty when he already had a fair
trial? The answer is that prejudice does exist in society today, but the only way to get past it is to create a color blind society. However, to do this,
race must first be taken into account. The problem is pervasive. Examples of prejudice coming through by ignoring race and race relations are seen in contemporary works of art.
When the film Gone with the Wind was made, for example, race was not really considered. No one believed that it was a
