is noted as "a highly regarded scholar of religion, philosophy, and African-American studies" (KNME, 2006). Another author notes, "Positioning himself at the intersection between the academy, the black church and the world at large, West has attracted considerable attention for his ability to discern synthesis where others see only chaos and inspire hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds" (Boynton, 1993). While there are people who may think his work is generally pointless, or far off base in terms of addressing the problems and conditions of the African American people in the nation, most find a great deal of enlightenment in his work as it generally offers perspectives not normally addressed. One of his works is "Race Matters." It is a work that illustrates how race is still a very prevalent and serious issue today and needs to be addressed. In the beginning of his work, when laying the foundations of the topics that will be discovered, he notes, in relationship to the riots in Los Angeles in 1992 that it was not a problem involving a "race riot nor a class rebellion" but that it "was a multiracial, trans-class, and largely male display of justified social rage. For all its ugly, xenophobic resentment, its air of adolescent carnival, and its downright barbaric behavior...signified the sense of powerlessness in America" (West, 1994; 3).
