always been and will always be criminals that break the law everyday. But having some form of police not only helps deter people from stealing other peoples belongings and harming
others individuals, it also protects the common citizen from being taken advantage of by theft or brute force. Without the police, crime would run rampant in the streets and peoples
lives and possessions would be in danger everyday. Therefore, having police and law enforcement officials is one of the most important social institutions in the world today. Without it, people
would loot and riot; stealing everything and anything they could get their hands on. The law provides people with a sense of normalcy and allows citizens to pursue life, liberty
and happiness without the threat of criminals looking to cause harm or steal from them. Obviously, the way America polices its streets is not a perfect system, but even criminals
and convicted felons know officers are out there and if they do something to break the law, there is a very good chance they could see jail time and even
be put to death depending on the severity of the crime they commit. Nonetheless, all law enforcement agencies have their faults and there are several underlying issues such as race,
gender and class that make police forces, which are undoubtedly extremely important and necessary social institutions, somewhat imperfect. In fact, often times, race, class and gender often help shape the
institution and the way it handles its daily operations. This essay will discuss some of those issues such as affirmative action and women on the force while providing various statistics
to show that police agencies and who they send to respond to a crime scene are often times shaped by race, class and gender.
