become more intimately associated with "place" and "region" than with any kind of historical identification with the place of ones ancestors origins. This has naturally led to a number of
interesting cultural developments, particularly as regards the establishment of new multicultural identities in places or regions where large groups of people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds tend to assemble.
Case in point: New Orleans. With the city of New Orleans known historically as a melting pot of French, African, and Native American cultures and sub-cultures, what kind of collective
cultural identity has been developed by New Orleanians and to what extent has this developed into a "sense of place"? Moreover, with Hurricane Katrina dislocating millions of native New Orleanians
in 2005, what effect has been wrought on that sense of place? Does the culturally established sense of place remain alive, and if so, is it something that will contribute
