and ethnicity, in particular, are often very difficult to definitively determine. Race, of course, is most often viewed as being biologically defined. There is even considerable controversy, however,
surrounding this distinction in who we are. Never-the-less, society continues to categorize itself into various subgroups of people. We use aspects of these subgroups to assess not just
the subgroup itself but to assess society as a whole. Multiethnic and multiracial societies present numerous societal frictions and concerns in todays world.
As a society we tend to look more at differences than at similarities and then to blame our troubles on those that are the most different. How we
technically define those differences has changed considerably, however, in even just the last few decades. Race, for example, has traditionally been defined on the basis of obvious external features
of a group of people. This is a biological approach that is utilized not just with human beings but with animals.
Biologically, race is considered a subspecies. While the subspecies can mate with other subspecies, in their most pure form they are characterized by clear features. In the
case of human beings we most often use skin color, facial features, and hair texture in our definition of race. Those of the African race, for example, have dark
skin, course curly hair, and a large nose and lips. The problem that arises with such a definition, of course, is our choice of criteria through which to define
