is nothing more than a system that invokes exploitation and alienation, and stands in the way of effectively addressing racial and social inequality. Because society is fundamentally based upon
performance and profit, it is not unusual to find that capitalism works as an opposing force for middle and lower class populations instead of one that actually benefits these two
social groups. Based upon theories of productivity, one cannot be the least bit shocked at how many contemporary societies still reflect incredible amounts of poverty, disease and homelessness in
spite of the fact that their resources are fully capable of feeding, clothing, housing, educating and medicinally caring for their suffering masses. The selfishness exuded each and every day
by capitalist America is - even though not necessarily outwardly obvious - significantly associated with the increase of individualism and egoism. Capitalism has proven to be both a blessing and
a curse in the overall scheme of mans quest to better his existence. While critics contend it has all but ruined the otherwise availing and equitable pursuit of modern
society, others support its continued presence and believe capitalism is meant to be a permanent part mans future that will prevail over any attempts to change that reality, inasmuch as
money and material success reflect capitalisms most honored values. However, according to Robert L. Heilbroners The Nature and Logic of Capitalism, economic changes are problematic for many reasons most
obviously due to "the number of variables that enter into their determination. But the question of what capitalism is presents challenges of another kind" (Heilbroner, 1986, p. 14).
