of the 1800s Russia has undergone some tremendous changes, changes that are still ongoing, it can be said. This paper will examine where they have been, where they are now,
and where they might possible head in the future. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the feudal system was still strongly in place. Education amongst the landed gentry enabled
more Russians to read and study abroad. As a result the influence of the West began to appear in the private collections, it could be assumed, of the very wealthy.
Science and math in Russia were accorded high rank, as scholars in these fields, were on the cutting edge of new discoveries. However, for all their achievements, it can
be said that the literature of the time far outstripped their achievements. This may have been because the Russian language became standardized. Alexander Pushkin was one writer of this era
that is still read today. Politically, however, times were entering troubled waters, it can be said. Perhaps it was the influence of the West, or merely the observation of
those who were traveling beyond Russias borders and so were able to compare Russias way of life to outsiders standards of living, but political unrest began among the ranks of
the wealthy. Many were secretly considering an end to Tsarist rule. A small attempt at revolution by the Decemberists sought to dethrone the Tsar and Tsarina, but were unsuccessful(Service, 1998).
Perhaps they were taking their cue from the several uprisings, but a short time later, Alexander II would introduce sweeping reforms, the largest and most influential of them being
