We can, however, examine various runways and types -- and then discuss D/FW International Airport with five parallel runways, is one of the airports in the world
with the most number of runways. But what is a runway? In its most basic definition, a runway is considered a "rectangular
area of defined dimensions used, or intended to be used, in whole or in part, for the take-off and landing of aircraft (Oxner, 2003). Additionally, runway numbers are chosen primarily
based on their magnetic heading -- and as take-offs and landings can be usd in both directions, runways are typically labeled with two numbers (Oxner, 2003). For example, if a
runways heading is 020 degrees (magnetic), then the number 02 would be on some runways (2 on others, mostly in the United States) (Oxner, 2003). But if the runway is
approached from the other direction, the number would be reciprocal of 020, and that would be 180 degrees off 020 degrees, which calculates to 20 (Oxner, 2003).
Runways, for the most part, are laid out, based on the numbers of a compass (NASA, 2005). In addition to the number, the runways compass
direction is also indicated by a large number painted at the end of each runway -- and before that are laid out eight white stripes (NASA, 2005). Five hundred feet
