imposes a moratorium on creativity and dreams. Robert Phillips in his poem, Running on Empty, chronicles this stretching of the boundaries and the cost of doing so. There are many
overt messages that one finds living and breathing within this short poem. Written in a free form Phillips addresses the issue of old versus new and how each has their
place in the scheme of things. Keeping each component in its proper balance is the trick. On a very shallow level, this poem is about a young man taking
the family car out for a spin at night. His fathers admonition to : "Always keep the tank half full, boy, half full, ya hear?" falls on deaf ears as
the son purposely cheats and tempts fate by driving below empty. However, from the beginning one understands that this is going to be a challenge of the younger to
the older versions of the world. The young man believes that the restrictions of his father are ridiculous, while the fathers experience has taught him that one cannot drive on
empty. One eventually gets where one is going, but not without reliable results, in other words. However, the young man cannot simply accept this advice from his father, he must
experience it for himself. As a teenager I would drive Fathers Chevrolet cross-country, given me
reluctantly: "Always keep the tank half full, boy, half full, ya hear?" (Phillips).
