colonial New York, in Manhattan to be exact, there was a large population of enslaved African Americans. These African Americans, bolstered by their numbers, tiring of ill treatment, began to
devise a way to free themselves. Rumor of Revolt: The Great Negro Plot in Colonial New York by T.J. Davis, tells of that revolt and of the terrible consequences left
in its aftermath. Davis states that in New York there was a large contingency of African slaves because the trading companies had designs on making
this port city the third leg in a large international import/export triangle. The slaves that were predominantly used in this area were imported from a place in African referred to
as Guinea. With the trade business booming, so did the slave population in New York. Then, in 1712, as recorded in the papers of then
Royal Governor Robert Hunter, there was a "bloody conspiracy of some of the Slaves of this place to destroy as many of the inhabitants as they could...to revenge themselves for
some hard usage they apprehended to have received from their Masters"(Davis 23). The Governor reports that a group of Africans were able to sneak away from their masters and set
fire to many of the largest buildings in the middle of town, and when the firemen and volunteers came to put out the blaze they were attacked by the black
men. The slaves managed to kill nearly nine of the men who came to fight the fire, then ran away. They were later apprehended along with nineteen other black men
who were considered to have been in on the planning or support of the acts. Their punishment was severe, public and extreme. According to Davis, they were executed on the
