RTS (Rape Trauma Syndrome) was developed to both offer prosecutors and law enforcement agencies a verifiable way and means to place criminals behind bars, but more importantly a way of
offering some semblance of counseling for the victims. In its own way, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) resembles the RTS in that its use as a diagnostic tool is paramount
in the evaluation of patients with mental disorders. Both tests are somewhat alike in that they address the psychological trauma experienced by the victims. Rather than to look at these
trauma response symptoms as diseases, it is more correct to say that they are an adaptation that the human mind/body developed to educate the body and mind so that these
types of situations would be avoided next time before it was too late. In other words, a survival mechanism. It should be said that experts all agree that not all
people who survive a traumatic event suffer from RTS or PTSD. It is only when symptoms persist or are extreme that people seek help. This one factor alone caused problems
for the RTS in a landmark case called State V Saldana. In 1982 the RTS ran into direct opposition in its usage by courts, prosecutors, and law enforcement. The RTS
is administered by a trained counselor for sexual assault victims. The test determines if the alleged victim has indeed been the victim of a crime, or is making it up.
Based on certain known criteria the psychologist makes an estimate on whether or not the alleged victim has been the victim of a rape. The State V Saldana would
reverse the usage of the RTS claiming that it was not reliable, that it could be faked by alleged victims who had ulterior motives for seeing someone placed in jail.
