have understood only too well was that certain intrinsic patterns and personality traits are established, most experts state, in the first few years of life. But, if this is true
what of those children who come from less than ideal backgrounds? What of those children whose role models are not something to be emulated? Can children ever escape the influence
of their parents, even as regards romantic relationships? The answer is not as cut and dried as a simple yes or no as some might believe. According to Erik
Ericksons ages and stages, parental attitude, proximity, and availability are qualities which babies seem to crave and to which they respond the most(Erikson 1994). In other words, parents are the
single most important thing in a babys life. This person becomes the childs caregiver, and as such wields an enormous amount of power over the child. As the child
grows older he or she may test those boundaries, but Erickson states that a child who does not have some sense of confidence in his parents ability to save him
from himself if he should get into trouble does not test boundaries (which is normal) nor attempt to move into the next developmental stages. A sense of rapport and trust
are imperative, then. Parental influence, then, by the time a person has become a teenager and older, has been cemented. For better or for worse, a child will always,
though not consciously, return to that point of wanting and/or needing a parents approval or blessing. Given this, then, when a young adult begins to have romantic relationships, his/her parents
influence may very well come into play. For example, suppose a young woman goes on a first date with a young man. He is nice and they have a
