explores that moment of truth, which occurs in everyones lifetime, where the mind, body and soul come into conflict. Because mankind is a biological entity he reacts to his environment often in ways that astound. In Rite of Passage, Olds examines the perspective of life, death, gender, and the startling reality of being human. The opening lines suggest an ordinary setting, replete with the trappings of a young childs birthday party. But, there is something more at work, here, Olds seems to be stating, than a mere exchange of gifts and well wishing. She observes her son as he interacts with the other children, both male and female. As the guests arrive at my sons party they gather in the living room-- short men, men in first grade with smooth jaws and chins.
