The concept of risk management is fairly straightforward: It involves a "systematic approach to analyzing risk and implementing risk controls" (Risk Management, 2010). However, when it comes to analyzing
risk in justice and security organizations, risk management morphs from a theoretical term into a potentially life-saving concept. The reason is because justice and security organizations these days seem to
be facing their share of violence more than ever before. Just recently, in fact, three county courthouses in Michigan were on high alert because of threats of violence against the
Tuscola, Genesee and Lapeer County courthouses in this state (Camp, 2010). Furthermore, in 2005, it seemed as though violence and threats of
violence against bench judges seemed to increase, as the Washington Posts Finkel pointed out that verbal and physical attacks against justices and court officials in courtrooms and elsewhere has been
on the rise. As a result, Finkel notes, "the increase in hostile responses is changing the very nature of American courtrooms" (2005). These changes can include everything from Kevlar-reinforced benches
and panic benches, to camera monitors, X-ray scanners and "safe" rooms and evacuation plans (Finkel, 2005). In other words, the role of risk
management in justice and security organizations is huge, especially in this day and age. We already outlined potential threats to justices on the bench.
